Treatment Options
Dr. Orisek specializes in treatment of the spine. Symptoms may include, neck pain, radiating arm pain, numbness, tingling, mid-back pain, lower back pain, radiating pain in legs, and headaches. Diagnosing the exact cause of your back pain demands great expertise because there are so many possibilities. For example, your pain could be caused by an injury to the joints, the discs, the ligaments or the muscles—or a combination of these structures.
When you see Dr. Orisek, he will have you fill out a complete medical history. This history includes your general medical condition and your individual lifestyle. Specific, spine-related issues of concern include your symptoms, their onset and progression, the location and severity of the pain, what home treatments you have used, what kind of work you do, etc. Dr. Orisek will review the diagnostic tests you have already had.
Dr. Orisek diagnoses and treats a wide variety of spine conditions and injuries that may cause you pain or other symptoms. Conditions he treats include herniated discs, degenerative disc disease, spondylolisthesis, spinal stenosis, kyphosis, compression fractures, carpal tunnel syndrome, sciatica and scoliosis. Although Dr. Orisek specializes in treatment of the spine, he is board certified with the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and may see you for other conditions involving arms, elbows, hands, wrists, knees, hips, legs, ankles and feet.
During your first new patient appointment, Dr. Orisek will review your medical history and your previous diagnostic testing. It is very important to bring your completed New Patient Packet, any and all prior medical records, as well as all prior radiologic films to that appointment.
Depending on your symptoms and the prior care you’ve had, Dr. Orisek will outline his recommendations for you. Recommendations could include additional diagnostic testing, physical therapy, and pain management. He will be happy to answer your questions. Most patients will schedule a follow up appointment to review the results from their recommended testing or treatment.
When a patient has not responded to various methods of conservative treatment, surgery may be recommended. When surgery is recommended, our staff works closely with you in scheduling the surgery and pre and post operative care needed. After surgery, patients will follow up with our office for up to a year or until they have reached their maximum potential of recovery.
Dr. Orisek treats many different spinal conditions. All procedures are uniquely designed and developed to provide patients with the best possible medical care. Below are descriptions of some of the procedures that Dr. Orisek performs. Please follow the link related to the specific procedure for more detailed information.
ALIF
Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion is a procedure performed by approaching the spine through the abdomen. It involves the insertion of a bone graft into the disc space to help the vertebrae to fuse together. http://www.spine-health.com/video/alif-anterior-lumbar-interbody-fusion-video.
AXIALIF
Axial Lumbar Interbody Fusion is a new, alternative approach to traditional fusion procedures performed by accessing your spine through a 1-inch incision next to your tailbone. It involves the insertion of a bone graft into the disc space to help the vertebrae to fuse together. http://www.smallincisionsbigresults.com/about/.
LLIF
Lateral Lumbar Interbody Fusion is a method of spine surgery in which the lumbar spine is approached through the patient's side. With the use of x-ray imaging, this procedure allows for dilation through the psoas muscle in a muscle splitting approach rather than approaching the spine anteriorly (through the abdomen) or posteriorly (through the back). Anterior (ALIF) and Posterior (PLIF/TLIF) approaches would require a larger incision with more muscle, bone and ligament disruption. Please view the video at the top of this page to see how the LLIF procedure works.
XLIF
Extreme Lateral Interbody Fusion is a minimally-invasive procedure used to treat leg or back pain generally caused by degenerative disc disease. The procedure is performed through the patient’s side, avoiding the major muscles of the back. It involves the insertion of a bone graft into the disc space to help the vertebrae to fuse together. http://www.spine-health.com/video/lateral-lumbar-interbody-fusion-xlif-video.
TLIF
Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion is a procedure that fuses the anterior and posterior columns of the spine through a posterior approach. A bone graft and interbody spacer stabilize the anterior portion while the posterior is locked in place with pedicle screws, rods and bone graft. http://www.spine-health.com/video/transforaminal-lumbar-interbody-fusion-tlif-video.
ACDF
Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion is an anterior approach to removing a cervical herniated disc in order to relieve spinal cord or root pressure and alleviate corresponding pain, weakness, and numbness. It involves the insertion of a bone graft into the disc space to help the vertebrae to fuse together. http://www.spine-health.com/video/anterior-cervical-discectomy-video .
CERVICAL TDA
Cervical Total Disc Arthroplasty is a minimally-invasive procedure where the surgeon removes the diseased intervertebral disc, decompresses the neurological elements and inserts an artificial disc implant into the disc space.

KYPHOPLASTY
Kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used for treating vertebral compression fractures resulting from osteoporosis. http://www.spine-health.com/video/kyphoplasty-osteoporosis-fracture-treatment-video .
X-STOP
X-STOP is a minimally invasive surgical procedure designed to relieve symptoms of lumbar spinal stenosis. http://www.spine-health.com/video/x-stop-interactive-video.
SCS
Spinal Cord Stimulator uses electrical impulses to control or relieve chronic pain and is used in patients for whom conservative treatments have failed. http://www.spine-health.com/video/spinal-cord-stimulator-implant-video.
LUMBAR TDA
Lumbar Total Disc Arthroplasty is a minimally-invasive procedure where the surgeon removes the diseased intervertebral disc, decompresses the neurological elements and inserts an artificial disc implant into the disc space. http://us.synthesprodisc.com/EN-US/DiscReplacement/ProDiscLumbar/AnimVideo.htm.
